New Year, New Aquarium: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Starting Fresh

It’s the start of a new year, and if you’re thinking of diving into the world of aquarium keeping or upgrading to a larger tank, you’re in the right place! Whether you're starting with a small tank or going big with a 200+ litre beauty, setting up an aquarium is a fun and rewarding project. So, grab your fish tank dreams and let’s get started on creating your perfect underwater world!

Step 1: Choose the Right Tank

First things first – the tank! Your aquarium size depends on your space and how many fish you plan to keep. If you’re just starting out, a 75 to 115-litre tank is perfect. It’s large enough to create a nice environment for your fish but still manageable for beginners. If you’re upgrading, you’re probably already envisioning a stunning centerpiece in your living room, so go ahead and pick the size that fits your space and needs.

Step 2: Gather Your Equipment

Now that you’ve got your tank, let’s talk equipment. Here’s a quick checklist of essentials:

  • Filtration System: A good filter is key to keeping your water clean and your fish happy. Aim for a filter that can handle more than your tank’s capacity for best results.
  • Heater (for tropical fish): If you're keeping tropical fish, a reliable heater is a must. Fish like it warm (but not too warm!).
  • Lighting: LED lights not only brighten up your tank but also help with plant growth if you’re planning a planted aquarium.
  • Substrate: Gravel or sand—choose what suits your fish and plants. Some fish like to dig, so make sure the substrate is soft and fish-friendly.
  • Water Conditioner: This helps to neutralize chlorine and other chemicals in tap water. Your fish will thank you for it!
  • AF Life essence: your starter bacteria to get your filter seeded to keep your fish tank water pristine.

Step 3: Set Up Your Tank

Time to put everything together! Rinse your tank, substrate, decorations, and any equipment with water (no soap, please!) before setting them up in the tank. Place the substrate at the bottom of the tank, set up your filter and heater, and add decorations. If you’re adding live plants, now’s the time to plant them.

Once everything is in place, fill the tank with water, set your heater to the right temperature (around 24-27°C for most tropical fish), and let the tank run for at least 14 days while dosing with AF Life essence before adding any fish. This is called “fishless cycling” the tank, and it helps create a stable environment for your fish.

Step 4: Test Your Water

Before adding your fish, it’s important to test your water. Get a water test kit to check the levels of ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. These are crucial for your fish’s health, and you want everything to be in the safe zone before you introduce any aquatic life.

Step 5: Pick Beginner-Friendly Fish

Now the fun part—choosing fish! Here are some beginner-friendly options that are hearty and easy to care for:

  • Betta Fish: These vibrant fish are beautiful, low-maintenance, and perfect for smaller tanks.
  • Neon Tetras: Small, peaceful, and colorful, these fish are perfect for community tanks.
  • Guppies: Hardy and active, guppies are great for beginners and come in a variety of colors.
  • Corydoras Catfish: These bottom dwellers help keep the tank clean by scavenging leftover food.

Step 6: Add Fish Slowly

When you’re ready to add fish, take it slow. Don’t overcrowd the tank all at once. Start with a few fish and give the tank some time to adjust to the new additions. Overloading the tank too quickly can cause the water to become unstable, which isn’t ideal for your fish.

Step 7: Ongoing Care

Maintaining your aquarium is key to keeping your fish healthy. Perform regular water changes (about 20-30% of the tank’s water every 1-2 weeks), monitor water parameters, and keep an eye on the filter. Feed your fish only as much as they can eat in a few minutes—overfeeding can lead to water quality issues.
